PlayLab is a new movement in science learning. It encourages thinking about everyday science through outdoor play and exploration. PlayLab’s aim is to get children and their caregivers comfortable talking together about science and to recognize themselves as scientific thinkers.
This year, PlayLab collaborated with the design firm of Chermayeff & Geismar to create the PlayLab Play Cards—a family guide to discovering and understanding the basic science and ecology of public parks and playgrounds. The Play Cards build on the PlayLab team's work with the New York City Mayor's Office, NYC’s Department of Parks & Recreation and Department of Education, the New York Hall of Science, and the Trust for Public Land to create "Science Play," a catalogue of science-play equipment based on key concepts of the city’s new K-8 science curriculum. PLayLab is an initiative of No Time To Lose, a group dedicated to creative thinking about the environment and informal learning outdoors. Understanding the way the world works increases enjoyment and enhances wonder. We hope that if children feel connected the natural world, they will be inclined to care for it now and in the future.
