Welcome Center Redesign at Valley Forge National Historic Park

Valley Forge is one of America’s most iconic Revolutionary War sites. The encampment where Washington’s army wintered in 1777–78 is also one of the largest open spaces left in suburban Pennsylvania. A national historic park, the 3,500-acre site welcomes 1.3 million visitors a year, but its 33-yeard-old Welcome Center requires an extensive reorganization to create a cohesive visitor experience. Recognizing that a successful redesign depends on an in-depth understanding of visitors’ needs and interpretive opportunities, the National Park Service (NPS) engaged JCC&A as interpretive planners and evaluators on the design team led by Bargmann Hendrie + Archetype of Boston (bh+a).
