Roosevelt Island’s Blackwell Park playground

On Roosevelt Island, the issue of transportation has great practical and symbolic significance—the island’s visual identity is grounded in waterways, bridges, and the iconic Roosevelt Island Tramway. Transportation, as a topic, naturally lends itself to a child’s innate curiosity and love of motion. A proposed playground by Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), which incorporates recycled tram components, demonstrates the Roosevelt Island community’s impressive dedication to science education and children’s play.

JCC&A is advising Lee Weintraub Landscape Architecture and the project team on integrating science-related concepts and equipment into the playground design based on extensive community dialogue.
