Free Play: Risk, Learning, and Design in Public Playgrounds

A conversation among designers and play specialists

Description: Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC 2030, which is now underway, will give New Yorkers hundreds of new public playgrounds. These timely developments come as scholars, educators, and designers are re-examining the way that children play today. Organized by JCC&A and sponsored by the Municipal Art Society, this international panel of play and design experts explored the intersection of design and safety on public playgrounds. Each presented different perspectives on and tested approaches for integrating unstructured play and elements of risk to foster enjoyment, play value, and informal learning.
